Living with Diabetes: Preventing Diabetes Complications
There are two main kinds of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. With Type 1 diabetes (also known as juvenile diabetes), which usually occurs in the onset of childhood, the body makes very little or no insulin. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10% of total cases. Type 2 diabetes (also known as adult-onset diabetes) accounts for 90% of cases.
With Type 2 diabetes, several conditions may be present. Variations include: the body producing insulin but in inadequate amounts; the body has lost some sensitivity to insulin; or both defects can be present. Gestational diabetes (a subset of Type 2 diabetes) is a condition resulting in high blood glucose levels during late stages of pregnancy. It affects about 5% of pregnancies.

Education
Seton Medical Center offers various educational programs to help people manage their diabetes. The Northern California Diabetes Institute at Seton Medical Center, an American Diabetes Association Certified Program, offers comprehensive diabetes self-management education. Although there is no cure for diabetes, there are ways to control this disease. We teach the most current information about diet, exercise, blood glucose monitoring, and other special issues such as stress and sick day management.
